Beechworth Historic Precinct Tour guide Michael Beattie played a starring role over the past six years, taking his place in the dock at Beechworth’s Historic Courthouse 14 times in annual trial re-enactments but says the time has come for a new, younger actor.
Now, the search has begun to find a replacement. Beechworth Historical Re-enactment Group is hosting auditions on Thursday 16 February at Beechworth Historic Courthouse.
Although the Ned Kelly Weekend isn’t until August, it will give the new “Ned” a chance to prepare for the role, including growing a suitable beard.
Michael Beattie studied Ned’s character from books and overcame nerves to put on memorable re-enactments over the years and has some good advice for any potential “Ned”.
“It is quite an unreal experience to play Ned as there is so much myth and legend attached to him,” he says.
“It is his controlled rage that you must capture and not get carried away with. Ned Kelly is all about bravado and making an impression.”
The Ned Kelly Weekend commemorates the anniversary of the committal hearing of the bushranger at the Beechworth Courthouse in August 1880.
