It's just 12 months since The Beechworth Men’s Shed was incorporated. Our shed is now fully operational opening twice weekly. Through a grant from the Victorian Men’s Shed Association we are organising training workshops in August for regional Men’s sheds, conducting in collaboration with Beechworth Health Service a Men’s Health night, and we are ready to start the process of building a new shed of our own.
Our current Shed , under a very generous short term lease agreement, looks most impressive. Provision for recreation, masses of workshop machinery and timber stockpiles provide for a hive of activity every Wednesday and Friday morning. Over 50 men are now members and the Shed provides for those who no longer have their own shed, for those who want some male company and for those disabled by injury, illness or stroke. Family members and friends have been delighted witnesses to the help this facility has become in the lives of their men.
We now have the ability to mill our own timber (thanks to the generosity of Lucas Mill) and also have purchased our own truck for transport.
Fundraising has been phenomenal. Jim Browning's efforts with wood raffles have raised thousands; John Herbst's constant search for philanthropic donations and government funds has resulted in the provision of money for new equipment and has allowed us to plan for building our own Shed later this year. The Shed is to be built on Beechworth Health Service land next to the Beechworth Secondary College. Here there will be opportunities to work with both BHS aged care residents and College students, as well as having space to establish vegetable gardens.
