Previously named the Mayday Hills, Beechworth was renamed in 1853. The most widely planted grape throughout Australia, is the Shiraz variety. Consequently, Shiraz wines account for one fifth of all wine grape production in the country. Both nationally and internationally, it is claimed that Shiraz is the most popular of all Australia's red wines.

Making up only one percent of Australia's grape crush, the Pinot Noir grape, it is suggested thrives in the cooler climates of Victoria. As such, some commentators claim, that this region produces the finest Pinot Noir wines.

The hot sunny days, and cool evenings of Beechworth, are claimed to be the ideal environment for the Chardonnay grape, producing a fine chardonnay wine. Internationally acclaimed, exports of this particular wine have increased rapidly during recent years and are enjoyed around the globe.

The Riesling grape has its roots in Germany, however, it has been planted in Australia for many years. Some would argue, that this specific district, produces some of the best quality Riesling in the nation. Despite its origins being in Germany.

Organic, bio dynamic wines are also produced in some of the vineyards in the region. The wines need to meet the high standards set by the certifiers in order to be labelled as bio dynamic. Some connoisseurs argue, that organic wine is more concentrated and of a higher quality than non organic produce.

Enjoyed around the globe, Beechworth wineries produce what some would argue, very fine wines. Visitors have plenty of vineyards to choose as there are two dozen in the region. Vineyard owners, open cellar doors for the tasting of wine, and such sessions are available to both individuals and groups.
