Mayday Hills Heritage Gardens

La Trobe at Beechworth Heritage GardensThe Mayday Hills heritage buildings and gardens are noted by the National Trust as Victorian Gardens of Significance. A ‘historic self guided walking tour’ guides visitors around the historic precinct and surrounds of the old Mayday Hills hospital or Beechworth Lunatic Asylum as it was originally named.

Established in 1867 as one of three major asylums in the state of Victoria, the hospital operated for nearly 130 years until its closure in 1995. Along the way visitors will discover fascinating facts and information relating to the asylum, its buildings and operations. The gardens cover 11 hectares and surround the historic buildings.

Beechworth Chinese Gardens

The Beechworth Chinese Gardens are located on Albert Road (the extension of Camp Street) as a memorial to Beechworth's chinese heritage and the nearly 5000 miners that worked the Beechworth goldfields. The gardens are free to visit and are an ever evolving project between the Beechworth Chinese Cultural Centre, Indigo Shire Council and the Lake Sambell Management Committee.

The garden's design and layout adopts the principles of Feng Shui to blend in harmoniously with the surrounds. The gardens are open 7 days a week.

 

Queen Victoria Park Beechworth

Queen Victoria Park BeechworthQueen Victoria Park is located approximately 1km from the centre of Beechworth and can be accessed from either Sydney Road or High Street. This park was first established in 1862 a botanical reserve and covers approximately 6 hectares. In 1891 volunteers further developed the park and added the two cannons. The park was officailly opened on 7th May 1902 by the then Minister of Agriculture John Morrissey M.L.A. in memory of 'Good' Queen Victoria.

Mt Pilot National Park

Mt Pilot National Park is located on the Beechworth - Chiltern Road approximately 15 minutes from Beechworth. The parl covers 21,600ha of low hills surrounding Chiltern and includes the striking Mt Pilot Range and Woolshed Falls. Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park includes the protected box-ironbark forest that once covered much of north-east Victoria. There are also several historic goldmining sites and aboriginal art sites. Short or day-long walks can be made on vehicle tracks through open forest and a 25km historic drive is also marked out from Chiltern through the forest and goldfields.

Beechworth Historic Park

Beechworth Historic Park is located 270 km north-east of Melbourne and is home to a number of significant goldmining sites are found within the boundaries of the parks 1020 hectares. The Beechworth Historic Park includes many eucalyptus and native cypress pine forests, creeks, steep gullies and rugged granite outcrops. Always keep to the tracks in the this part of Beechworth as there are many open mine shafts still remaining.

Beechworth Town Hall Gardens

Beechworth Town Hall GardensThe Beechworth Town Hall Gardens were designed and laid out by Richard Jenkyns in 1875 with most of the large trees that still remain today having been gifted to Beechworth by Baron Von Mueller, the Victorian Government Botanist of the time. The rotunda was built in 1876 and is a popular venue for Beechworth bands and meetings. The supporting pillars and wrought iron were cast by the local foundry of Staughair and Duncan.
