Beechworth Cascades

Beechworth CascadesThere is definately no swimming here, but only due to the size of the small rock pools that fill with water that is tumbling down through the Beechworth cascades to the Woolshed Falls some 4 km's away. Accessing these cascades does require a small amount of careful rock hopping and avoiding the occassional mossy rock so take care. There are plenty of small rock pools to sit in, cool down and relax, some with fast flowing waters which provide a natural massage.

When you take the slow one way drive around the Beechworth Gorge stop to see the cascades. On the opposite side of the bridge you will see a narrow dirt path leading down to the cascades. Be careful, it can be step and slippery. The views down into the valley are wonderful and on a hot summers day it's one of the best locations in Beechworth to sit in a cool pond and cool off.

The cascades formed where Spring Creek drops some 150 metres from the Beechworth plateau into the old Reid Creek goldfield. The creek bed at the cascades is almost entirely granite with small pools sculptered by sand and water over thousands of years.

In 1853 William Howin descibed the cascades 'there's a fine wild glen running down from Spring Creek to Reids Creek commencing with a bold waterfall close to the diggings'
