Boat Fishing in Beechworth is popular on Lake Sambell and enables anglers to access some or the more distant locations that are not easily reached on foot. Most of the species caught on Lake Sambell were near the fallen trees off of the embankment. They are also caught in the centre of the lake and around the edges of the reeds. Gold Perch (yellowbelly), trout and Redfin are all caught regularly.
Lake Sambell is listed on the Department of Primary Industries 'Family Fishing Lakes' and is stocked in the 2nd and 3rd term school holidays each year. The location of Family Fishing Lakes is determined based on their accessibility for anglers of all ages and abilities and also their location with regards to population centres throughout Victoria. Fishermen over the age of 18 are required to hold a valid fishing licence.
