It was erected in 1954 in honer, and in memory, of the pioneers who founded Beechworth and the fact that it was once a famous gold mining town.

Kangaroos in Beechworth

Kangaroo in BeechworthThe hills and farms around Beechworth are home to a number of large mobs of Eastern Grey Kangaroos. Eastern Grey Kangaroo’s (Macropus giganteus) are found in south and eastern Australia and are also known as the Great Grey Kangaroo and the Forester Kangaroo. A big Eastern Grey male Kangaroo will generally weigh around 66 kg and stand almost 2 metres tall.

 

Without a doubt the kangaroo is Australia’s most iconic and features on the Australian coat of arms and on some of the national currency. The kangaroo is important to both Australian culture and the national image and consequently there are numerous references in business and culture.

Boat Fishing in Beechworth

Boat Fishing in Beechworth is popular on Lake Sambell and enables anglers to access some or the more distant locations that are not easily reached on foot. Most of the species caught on Lake Sambell were near the fallen trees off of the embankment. They are also caught in the centre of the lake and around the edges of the reeds. Gold Perch (yellowbelly), trout and Redfin are all caught regularly.

Beechworth Skateboard ParkBeechworth Skateboard Park is located on Harper Avenue near the old Beechworth Railway Station. It is a modest skateboard park which is popular with locals and visitors alike. There is a set of rules which all users must abide by. Harper Avenue is only 300 metres from the centre of town and is also close to the seasonal Beechworth swimming pool.

Lest We Forget. The memorial was unveiled by Major-General Sir Kingsley Norris K.B.E., C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., ED., K.S.T.J., M.D. on 12th April 1964.
