Beechworth KoalasSeeing a Koala in Beechworth is relatively common, especially around the well treed areas of the gorge and Silver Creek. Beechworth Koala’s are typically larger than those found outside of Victoria with longer and thicker fur which is a darker, softer grey with chocolate-brown highlights on the back and forearms.

Mt Pilot National Park

Mt Pilot National Park is located on the Beechworth - Chiltern Road approximately 15 minutes from Beechworth. The parl covers 21,600ha of low hills surrounding Chiltern and includes the striking Mt Pilot Range and Woolshed Falls. Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park includes the protected box-ironbark forest that once covered much of north-east Victoria. There are also several historic goldmining sites and aboriginal art sites. Short or day-long walks can be made on vehicle tracks through open forest and a 25km historic drive is also marked out from Chiltern through the forest and goldfields.

Wallaby Mine Walk / Drive BeechworthThe walk from Lake Kerford to the Wallaby Mine is along the roads, a distance of approximately 2 kilometres. Having passed Lake Kerford, at the intersection turn left and follow the signs. Cross over the next intersection, Rawes Road, and the Wallaby Mine Car Park is approximately 800 metres along. There are two levels to view the mine. The walk is quite steep. From the car park you can follow a narrow path leading from the West of the car park down through the bracken, or you can follow the path on the Eastern side and walk down the road. The two paths join about 150 metres down the hill. Following the grassy 4 wheel track down about another 100 metres you will see a sign to the mine on your right.

One Tree Hill Walk Beechworth

The Walk commences near the Golden Horseshoes Monument at the northern end of Beechworth. From here drive your car along the Old Chiltern Road until you arrive at Ingram’s Rock. We suggest you park your car here and walk towards Fiddes Quarry. Some parts of the walk are quite steep.

Beechworth Chinese CemetaryThe Beechworth Chinese Cemetary located in the Balaclava Road Beechworth Cemetery. There is an excellent self guided tour map which can be collected at the front gates of the cemetery and is well worth the gold coin donation. The chinese made a significant percentage of the mining population in the Beechworth goldfields and following the Buckland riots of July 1857 the increased dramatically to around 5000.

Lake Sambell Walk Beechworth

Lake Sambell Walk BeechworthEnjoy a gentle walk around Beechworth's historic Lake Sambell, watch the early morning steam rise from the lake, feed the ducks or watch the rich sunsets from near the banks of the caravan park.You can start this walk anywhere around the lake. To complete a circuit of the lake will take about 30 minutes (depending on stops) and is an easy walk.

 

If you have driven, park your car at the 'beach' and playground area. Facing the lake you will see a track that heads off to the left. Follow this, it will take you around the top of the lake and towards the caravan park.
