Heaven and Hell Walk BeechworthThe Starting Point is at the Silver Creek Caravan Park. In the camping area in the clearing nearest Beechworth you will see a small creek. This is Spring Creek. Here you will find two wooden bridges. One crosses Spring Creek and heads up some stairs to the old mine shafts, if you're on this track, turn back, you're going the wrong way. Slightly upstream a smaller foot bridge also crosses Silver Creek. It is this bridge you need to cross.

Beechworth Gorge Drive

The Beechworth Gorge drive is a simple drive that every visitor to Beechworth should undertake. Also known as the tourist drive the road starts at the Sydney Road entrance and takes you through some of the regions most spectacular scenery. There are great views across the Woolshed Valley. cascades and boulders. Depending on th etime of day you may also encounter some of the local wildlife with wallabies, lace monitors and koala's all quick common.

Beechworth Cemetery

Beechworth CemeteryThe current Beechworth Cemetery was opened in 1856 to replace the original cemetery which was located in Loch Street for the period 1853 to 1856 on the site of the old Congregational Church which still remains. Located on Balaclava Road the Beechworth Cemetery is divided in to the various religious denominational sections including the Beechworth Chinese Cemetery and the pioneer graves which were moved from the Loch Street cemetery in 1857.

Woolshed Falls Walk

Woolshed Falls Walk in BeechworthBeechworth’s spectacular Woolshed Falls were once was the centre of the richest Goldfields in Victoria, with more than 8000 Gold Miners or Diggers living along the banks of this small stream. The Falls are 5 kms from Beechworth. Heading from Beechworth to Wodonga veer left at the Chiltern turnoff and left again into McFeeter's Road. Follow the road until in becomes unsealed then look for the Woolshed Falls sign pointing to the right after the bridge. Arriving at the car park one road heads to the left to the observation deck. The toilets are near the entrance to the car park, and the start of the walk is near the information boards. There are also toilet facilities. The images contained on this page depict a small detour to the recommended course. The recommended course is suitable to most people, as opposed to the more adventurous route in the photos.

La Trobe at Beechworth Heritage Gardens

La Trobe at Beechworth Heritage GardensLa Trobe at Beechworth welcomes visitors to its magnificent heritage buildings and gardens noted by the National Trust as Victorian Gardens of Significance. A ‘historic self guided walking tour’ guides visitors around the historic precinct and surrounds of the old Mayday Hills hospital or Beechworth Lunatic Asylum as it was originally named.

Established in 1867 as one of three major asylums in the state of Victoria, the hospital operated for nearly 130 years until its closure in 1995. Along the way visitors will discover fascinating facts and information relating to the asylum, its buildings and operations. The gardens cover 11 hectares and surround the historic buildings.

Lake Kerferd Walk

This walk begins near the Lake Sambell Caravan Park, at the end of Junction Road. The 5 kilometre walk follows Hurdle Creek/ Spring Creek, Silver Creek, and takes you past mines different to those on Reid's Creek and Woolshed Goldfields.

The area around Hurdle Flat has numerous deep mine shafts which were developed after the alluvial gold was removed. Deep lead or quartz mining was fruitful but required labour and capital. Many miners formed themselves into companies to acquire the necessary machinery and funds. The ore taken from these mines was crushed at nearby stamping batteries, with the gold then being separated from the residue. Several shafts can be viewed along the track, but take care here.
