My
love of N.E.Victoria with its food, wine and skiing led me
back to this area when I finished my specialist anaesthetic
training; I had been a GP in nearby Mt.Beauty so I knew the
area well. The hills rising up from the floor of the Ovens
Valley were already producing outstanding wines from the likes
of Giaconda and Sorrenberg, it only seemed natural to take
advantage of the cooling effects of elevation, the already
obvious potential of the Beechworth wines and locate a site
within the region.
The old Brown Brothers Everton Hills property which had produced superb
long aged reds in its day, under their Family Reserve label but was
now overgrown, appeared on the market. The chance to pick up a vineyard
site with a pedigree is rare in the new world; the superb view from
the top of the hill didn't hurt either! I was on my way in Beechworth.
Since
committing ourselves to the soil here, other exciting Beechworth
projects have hit the winelists. Savaterre, Castagna and Cow
Hill to name but three.
The
regional review in Divine Food and Wine December/February 2004
issue is well worth a look at to get a handle on Beechworth
and its progress.
