History repeats itself at Beechworth's Burke MuseumHistory will repeat itself in the Burke Museum with the halls once again echoing to lectures of knowledge and wisdom. It all dates back 150 years ago when the Beechworth Athenaeum was renamed the Robert O’Hara Burke Museum (Burke Museum) in honour of the Burke & Wills famed explorer after his death at Coopers Creek in 1861. The former Athenaeum was renowned as a place of intellectual refinement and learning hosting scholars, philosophers, scientists and dignitaries giving lectures on a range of subjects to educate the local community. |

Mr Bernie Geary OAM to deliver the 2013 Beechworth Kerferd OrationThe Principal Commissioner for the Commission for Children and Young People, Mr Bernie Geary OAM, will deliver this year’s Beechworth Kerferd Oration in July. Mr Geary’s oration will link with a research project in Beechworth investigating how young people make a life for themselves after school and their need to make meaningful connections in their community. Chairperson of the Kerferd Oration committee Joan Simms said today the Oration committee, now a sub group of the Beechworth Neighbourhood Centre, was delighted to turn the focus of the Oration to young people. |

Indigo’s Heritage Awards celebrate residents’ commitment
An album of songs inspired by the gold rush days of Yackandandah and written and sung by Pete Denahy has won the Indigo Shire Heritage Gold award.
Indigo Shire Mayor Cr Barb Murdoch welcomed more than 60 attendees at the awards presentation last night (Friday 10 May 2013) at the Beechworth Historic Courthouse.
“It is very pleasing to see the level of commitment to heritage and the high quality work that has gone into the entries for this year’s Heritage Awards,” Cr Murdoch said. “And to once again see young people involved is fantastic.”
“Five of the award categories align with the National Trust award structure and all the awards recognise those in our community who have contributed to a greater understanding about where we live and our Shire's history.” |
