The Ovens District Hospital was for many years the only hospital between Melbourne and Goulburn NSW. The initial building was completed in 1857 at a cost of 2,347 pounds. There were further additions between 1858 and 1890. In 1890 the isolation ward known as 'Little Canada' was built, named after a Canadian miner who lived in a nearby cabin. The hospital was demolished in 1940 when the new Beechworth Hospital on Sydney road was built. In 2005, the Sydney Road hospital was further upgraded. Due to the shortage of building materials during WWII all salvageable building materials from the Ovens & Murray Hospital were re-used for public works within Beechworth.
