Peter
and Di Smith first planted chardonnay grapes in Beechworth
in 1979 under the suggestion of their good friend John Brown.
Smiths Vineyard is only 3.2 hectares in size. Their daughter
Sarah Flamsteed and husband Will, now manage the site and hope
to continue the level of fruit quality. The vineyard is at
550 metres altitude and on a hillside over looking the Ovens
Valley and Mt Buffalo. It is the oldest vineyard in Beechworth,
and produces premium boutique wines.
Will
and Sarah's vision include the development of wines under the
Smith Vineyard family label as well as under a new brand, "Flamsteed"-
a label developed in conjunction with Will's brother, Steve
Flamsteed.
Great
wine is made in the vineyard and our philosophy of minimal
impact viticulture and traditional winemaking methods is foremost
at Smiths Vineyard.
