Beechworth Theatre Company wins
Best actress and Most Popular Play at the Corowa short play
festival last weekend.
Members of The Beechworth Theatre
Company showed their talent and dedication when they took four
ten minute plays to the Corowa Short Play festival, “Unleashed
on the Murray”.
Following two successful shows in Beechworth, members of BTC enjoyed success
at the festival winning two of the three prizes with Ildiko Howlett taking
out best actress honours with her fine portrayal
of Miss Westlake, a retired headmistress of an elite girls school wanting to
get into a very respected retirement home when an unexpected event from her
past comes back to haunt her. Ildiko’s strong characterisation of Miss
Westlake was utterly convincing and sensitive as she grapples with the situation
as it emerges.
And the second honour, the audience
voted most popular was won by Roberta Baker and Wendy Stephens,
Judges commented on the sense of fun that the actors managed
to portray as Betty (Roberta Baker) and Wynn (Wendy Stephens),
fast aging and long time friends resting at an outdoor café after
an afternoon of ballroom dancing at the senior citizens club.
Together they discuss the problems of finding suitable male
dance partners and reminisce with hilarious repartee, about
good times, past beaux, husbands and future possibilities.
