Enjoy a gentle walk around Beechworth's historic Lake Sambell,
watch the early morning steam rise from the lake, feed the ducks
of watch the rich sunsets from near the banks of the caravan
park.
You can start this walk anywhere around the lake. To complete
a circuit of the lake will take about 30 minutes (depending on
stops) and is an easy walk.
If you have driven, park your car at the 'beach' and playground
area. Facing the lake you will see a track that heads off to
the left. Follow this, it will take you around the top of the
lake and towards the caravan park.
As you approach the caravan park you will see the small pond
to your right. Follow the path which is between the lake and
the pond. While only short, this path has steep steps and can
get muddy after rainfalls. The path is clearly marked and keeps
you close to the lake, passing the caravan camping area on your
right. There are a few steps to climb before following the path,
maybe stopping to look out from the bird watching hide. Continue
on this path and decend the steps towards the lake before crossing
a small uneven and unmade clay and gravel path. At the end of
this path is a step set of steps which will lead you back to
the road. Be careful here as there are no footpaths. Once back
on the road follow it for 200 metres. You will find a vacant
patch of land (not the one at the end of the step steps).
You will now be following the road looking for the second vacant block
of land. As you approach you will see a narrow unmade path following
the fenceline back towards the lake. Take this path and it will take
you to the back of the houses and along the lake until you loop back
towards where you began.
